KHIVA ICHAN KALA

Our design proposal for a hotel complex within the buffer zone of the Ichan Kala World Heritage Site in Khiva, Uzbekistan, has received initial approval from UNESCO.

In collaboration with our London partners Atomik Architecture the design enhances and respects the setting of the Mevaston site to create a world class 21st century hotel rooted within the context, history, and culture of Uzbekistan.

Our starting point with the design was to look at the existing street patterns, urban grain and scale of the city to see what could be learnt in terms of sense of place, orientation, environmental adaptation and use of materials.

To understand the scale and massing we superimposed fragments of the existing city onto the site to create a carpet of development linking activities and functions in a way that would break down the scale and mass of the hotel activities.
